I can't get any of my printers to work with Vista. The manufacturers have not released updated drivers. If I installed a print server and connected my printer to that, would it solve my problem?

Try to install a new printer and the installation will search the drivers from the internet. I've new drivers for my very old canon printer

No, as you'll still need the drivers.

I have a network and just used vista to find the printer on my network and had no problems it appears though searching did not work I had to browse to find my network
